The employment team advises a broad range of individuals on various employment issues.

The team has negotiated sophisticated severance packages and advised on complex discrimination issues as well as unfair dismissal situations.

The team has particular experience in advising senior personnel and executives on their contractual arrangements to ensure that they reflect their expectations. The employment team also deals with confidentiality issues and restrictive covenants, whether reviewing them at the point the employment starts or when the employment comes to an end.

Phasing out the default retirement age

29th July 2010

Currently, an employer can force an employee to retire at the age of 65 without paying any financial compensation. The only obligation on an employer is to hold a meeting with the member of staff to discuss plans at least six months before their 65th birthday. Although the employee can request to work beyond the default retirement age, the employer does not have to agree to the request, or justify any refusal.
